Conclusion:
Because I am self-taught musician with precious little theory, I struggle with these themes. What I have found is that I get a lot of great ideas from music arranged by other arrangers. I love the Lyle Ritz arrangements and there are great many ideas for passing chords and substitutions in his books. Every now and again I actually remember (not often!!) his ideas and include them in my playing I am sure that for him, he barely even thinks about how to get sweetly from one chord to another, but he has written down some of his arrangements for us to learn from.
Look guys, it must be clear that I am struggling, but if these notes help you to get even one idea that you find useful, I will be delighted.
